When I was a volunteer for the Toronto Dyke March, I designed a few signs, a promotional T-shirt for their hashtag #DYKEVERSITY and some social media advertisements. Toronto Dyke March is a grassroots community that ties together ALL women within a feminist, queer, and anti-oppressive framework.
The T-shirt design was based on what the head of the committee wanted for the promotional T-shirt; the other designs were created by me independently. The T-shirt is #DYKEVERSITY Toronto 2015 with the Dyke March Toronto logo on the front and the Pride Toronto logo on the sleeve. The hashtag and "Toronto 2015" form a "L." After I created the artwork and I had it approved by the committee, I looked for the quote for the T-shirt. Even though they went with their supplier I started briefly working with the branding officer to review and approve the final production artwork proof. Pride Toronto greatly appreciated the commitment of this project for Dyke March Toronto 2015.
The advertisements used purple with white typographic lettering to create constancy with social media posters. One of the posters was to advertise for more volunteers; it can still be seen on their website. The postcard advertising the event day was the only printed media produced. The photo was from a previous event they hosted that was credited to the original photographer. This postcard was produced for a movie viewing for the TIFF Inside Out festival for patrons collected at the reception table.
On Instagram, there was a one-month advertisement of an image-based countdown until the march. On Facebook, there were some advertisement banners that I did. The pre-show party poster, Libido, was about showing nightlife, fun, celebration and energy without using any people in the advertisement. The poster was well-received with patrons viewing a printed version on the event day.
If I had to volunteer with Dyke March Toronto again, I might change my communication with the group about perusing more projects I would have liked to try with them. But since there were good ideas, I am okay with the outcome.
