Markham-Unionville Willowdale Rotary Golf Tournament 2015

Case Study

I was designing for the Markham-Unionville / Willowdale / York Rotary Club Golf Tournament for 2015, an all-day outdoor golf event. The Markham-Unionville / Willowdale / York Rotary Golf Tournament is an annual golfing event that fundraises funds for featured charities.

I had to think strategically about my time management to complete this large project.  For this golf tournament design, I wanted to organize the design so that everything remains consistent visually. This helped manage the designing the signs, tickets, advertisements and brochures has one unit of work.

I chose a clean design to make the sign visible from a distance.  The background of all the signs is one large golf course cropped in various ways. It was a consistent theme throughout my design process. I chose the golf field image first; then, I would design the blue title to be bold & large and the blue subtitle with a significantly lighter font. The golden yellow was used as borders. The punctuation marks and number lists are golden yellow and the informational text is a light blue font. When I was done designing one sign I used it as a template for the other signs with some modifications depending on the sign.

I added an illustration of a golfer on every page in green to add more character to the brochure. For the programme, I added an image of golf balls. The colour scheme was of the corporate colours of the Rotary International. The colours were used on the borders of the writings and titles of the subjects. The advertisement of the Rotary Golf / Oak Ridge Moraine event was of the train that was featured in the event with the marigold used has a background colour band over the image and the cobalt blue being the text in the same font choice on the signs.

The poster was an illustrated golfer with a green background. This was different from the rest of the event day designs because I wanted the colour to be eye-catching and bold. The information is all justified to the right of the golfer to showcase the graphic as a focal point.

I managed to be on time for the signs, brochure and other printouts with how I managed my time. If I had to design a large project under four days to the event, I would do a similar choice of organizing my time. I did collect all the media that I needed before I designed anything. I also choose colours that were not too out-there for a golf tournament and on brand of the fundraising not-for-profit. What I would change for the next time I would design something this large again would be collecting some of the logos myself to make it faster to design some of the products needed.
